Whilst studying for a business qualification at Gloucestershire College I increased my passion, drive and motivation for work. This passion created our business ethos that is based upon a hands-on approach to constantly improve efficiency by offering high quality reliable services. From a young age I took great interest in gardening helping my grandfather on his large garden on the outskirts of Stroud. One outstanding memory as a child was the exceptional smell of freshly cut grass at the start of the grass cutting season. Despite the large amount of competition within the area, I was undeterred and packed up my small car ready to go with just a few hand tools that I had purchased from my earnings from my evening and weekend job at the local supermarket, starting out doing small gardening jobs within the local community.
After College I continued my education by embarking upon a business management degree at the University of Gloucestershire. This high level of education and work experience allowed me to get a job with a contracting organisation to further develop my skills. This also amplified the relevance of my university course as I was able to start applying academic theory to practice which is never as simple as it sounds when you are sat in a lecture hall.
Over the first few years whilst studying, my customer base slowly increased through word of mouth. Having reached the end of my university degree it was time to take a step forward, creating Geoffrey Urch Garden Services and I haven’t looked back. Based on the outskirts of Newent in Gloucestershire we now operate throughout the three counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
To get to this stage we have invested in our team and purchased a variety of equipment such as commercial mowers and diggers. Creating this business has been hard work but very rewarding. I feel that there are many young entrepreneurs that have creative/inspiring business ideas to do the same.
